It is my honor to run alongside two wonderful colleagues for the opportunity to represent Members-In-Training from across the nation to the Board of Trustees. Over the tenure of this position, we will witness unprecedented changes that will fundamentally shift the future of psychiatry. I want to share my enthusiasm and excitement for these challenges ahead, and ask for support as your Member-in-Training Trustee-Elect.
As I conclude my training in Family Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Iowa, I will be beginning a 2-year fellowship at the University of Washington. For the past 2 years I have been busily representing MIT interests on the APA Council on Medical Education where I have gained invaluable insight to national MIT issues and the professional organization of the APA. I have lobbied hard for continued support of combined psychiatry training opportunities, and MIT access to collaborative models that may reshape our profession.
After pharma funding severely cut the public psychiatry fellowship, I worked aggressively with APA staff, fellow colleagues and MIT’s to procure immediate funding and ensure the APA continues to highly prioritize fellowship opportunities for future MIT’s. Our success has demonstrated the power of the MIT voice, and the experience in how to apply it. This is particularly poignant in the face of continued cuts to APA fellowships.
I have spoken with many of you who have shared your concerns about the large disconnect between national governance and local area chapters, new work-hour restrictions, and quality of life issues. I have a strong record of public leadership, team building, and communication in both primary care and mental health, and would be honored to serve your needs. With your support, we can work to ensure that the future of psychiatry (YOU!) has a hand in molding the ever-changing present for the best.
