Candidacy Overview
As tomorrow’s physicians, we are poised to inherit a mental health treatment system shaped by a distinct confluence of regulatory, financial, and practice pressures. Advocating for an equitable, effective, efficient, and rational approach to this transformation requires psychiatric leaders facile in navigating political, administrative, and clinical landscapes and versed in the distinct lexicons used by those in positions of power. In the steps we take to become psychiatrists, we must prepare to become leaders in medicine.
At present, the APA is faced with a political imperative to protect the interests of psychiatrists in the face of sweeping regulatory changes, from local jurisdictions to the federal level. The APA is further poised to modernize our membership and publication systems, and continue to evolve the organization of our leaders to optimize our productivity and responsiveness in the face of a changing environment. It is therefore all the more essential to ensure the continued flow of in-training members into the ranks of APA leadership and bring the expertise of our members in training with experience in these domains to move the APA forward.
Given these major issues, I would start simple – serve as a centralized collaborator at the APA’s major gatherings to be the organizing agent for the APA’s member in training base. Developing articles to include within the APA’s many publications, and encouraging my in-training colleagues to do the same, fosters a narrative for members in training that inspires action. Prior APA Member In Training Trustees (MITTs) have undertaken similar tactics with success; I recall my own experience with MITTs that has demonstrated member in training action engages tomorrow’s psychiatrists to contribute to the advancement of our profession.
With an engaged base of members in training, the APA is even better positioned to execute our advocacy (imagine advocacy campaigns that involve even more members in training voices), evolve our technology platforms (imagine members in training involved in developing digital editions of APA materials on mobile devices), and members in training coordinated both centrally as well as distributed through the APA’s interest groups, councils, committees, district branches, and the assembly.
Many medical associations, like the APA, face common opportunities and threats, and I bring over seven years of leadership experience with medical organizations that is directly relevant to the strategic questions facing the APA. These include years of discussions regarding integrating technology, the outreach and engagement of members, planning for financial growth, optimization of leadership structure, making political change, and how best to involve junior members. Like other organizations, the APA will continually develop our answers to these questions authentic to our values and experience, so involving the voices of those experienced in organizational change accelerates our movement forward. I am one such voice, and would value the opportunity to drive this change as the elected representative of the APA’s Members in Training on the APA Board of Trustees.
Please do not hesitate to reach out with any comments, questions, or to say hello. I would be grateful for the honor of representing you within APA governance. My contact email address is bhurley2@partners.org.
